My SC has more play in the steering box than it should. What is the best way to fix this.

Glenn,

I am in the process of redoing my 54, and I also had an extra ordinary amount of play in the steering. What you have to do is remove the top of the gearbox(transmission cover) flip it over, inside there you will find a worm gear and wheel, if the gears are in good shape it would be my guess that the two(2) timken taper roller bearings are worn out.

My problem was the timken bearings were shot, the inner races were both shot the bearing cages were gone. You could turn the steering wheel one full rev and it would finally take up the end-play and the wheel would turn.

The bearing are available at your local bearing place,
The numbers are:
timken number 12cb(inner race)
timken number 13c (outer race)
they are about 27.75 a piece for the inner and 8.18 a piece for the outer

the quick way you could also try and take up the slack is to disengage the drag-link and turn the steering wheel 180 degrees to engage a new part of the worm and worm wheel. If you still have the play then you will have to go after the bearings.

Good luck to you.
