I just picked up a Case Model VA S/N# VA-5458702.

It's parked at a shop where my son-in-law works and he's going to help me get this old girl in as best running shape as possible. I'm new to tractors and know very little, he has a decent mechanical background. He's sending the water pump out to get rebuilt, so no problem there from what I see.

What I need to know is all the fluid info for this tractor, weights and amounts, ie. engine, trans, hydraulics for eagle hitch, rear end, and cooling system. Is there a Thermostat some where in the cooling system, if so where?

Thanks, all help is appreciated.

Ron

Ron: If you are launching into a significant refurbishment you really need to get manuals. You need an Operators manual, Service manual and a Parts manual is helpful if you are a long way from a Case dealer or your local dealer isn't very helpful.
You can get manuals from this very site (see market place upper left) or check ebay.

If you look at the service manual for the VA on this website it starts past my year of tractor, man I don't get it, what's so hard about getting some free accurate info online. I'm telling you if I had the right manuals I put the whole thing on the web for all guys to use.

Come on Paul it's not like I'm asking for the combination to fort knox, or a quatum physics answer, just some accurate specs.

Ron, I agree with Paul f on the manuals if you are doing a restoration. The service manual provides most of the information for overhaul. The parts manual has exploded views of assemblies for identification and of parts within. The operator's manual is basic not much use if service manual is avail. Manuals are by tractor series, not by year. Any Va series manual after 1951 will cover your tractor. The later the manual the better, especially parts manuals.

Engine oil: SAE 10 to 30 depending on ambient. I use 30 wt year around. Many people use 10-30.4 qts. 5 qts if you have the optional filter.

Air cleaner cup: same as engine crankcase.

Steering (bolster): SAE 140 (if oil lubricated),fill to top of worm gear. I use 85-140. If grease fitting keep sufficient grease in the housing to cover gears.

Torque tube: SAE 10 or 20 motor oil depending on ambient. I use general pupose tractor hydraulic fluid. Capacity 8 qts, fill to lip of opening for the fill plug.

Transmission: SAE 90. I use 80-90. Capacity 28 qts. Fill to full mark on dipstick.

The t-stat is located in the cylinder head water outlet hose just above the elbow.

Thanks for the info Joe, it's greatly appreciated. I understand the need of all three manuals on the VA, but for now all I needed was the specs you gave me. A total restoration most likely won't happen, atleast not any time soon. When the time arises and I decide to go that way your right Joe, the manuals are definetly a necessety.

Thanks for your input
Ron

mj, thanks for the specs and the website, I deciced to get the service manual and parts manual from www.repairmanual.com it will probably be a couple weeks before I get them.

I do have a question for you or others that might read this post.

currently my VA doesn't have a PTO, is it possible to put one on? If so where's my best chance on finding the complete unit and do you have a ball park on how much it would cost?

I've got a picture of the rear of the tractor but without a email address I can't send it to you or others.

Thanks
Ron
