Hello all,
New to this board and tractors in general, blame RFD TV ;)

We have 10 acres in the Oregon Coast Range, most of it is hilly, but there are a lot of logging roads on it. I have been thinking a Tractor, would be a great project, and very usefull around here. There are a lot of chores on the property, I think it could do well, many centered around pulling logs and firewoord around.

Talking to the lady who lives above us, and is a very good friend yesterday, Tractors slipped into the conversation, she said I did not know you were into that, and said she had one she wanted to sell, up on top of the hill. A gentleman who reciently passed away had willed it to her. He had been working on it for several years outside, and I guess 2 years ago it was running. many belts hoses, etc have been replaced, but I have no way to really know what the current condition is, without going thru it. I have a friend that restores Allis Chalmers, and another that does Farmalls, so I do have some knowledgeable help to call on. She asked what its worth, and truthfully money is very tight on both sides of this deal. Any help as to value, I would be thankful for, I have no idea, and want to make a fair offer. I also need to know, if its the right tractor for my needs, or too much to bite off for a first project.

This is what I can tell you about it.
1946 Case VAC
Wide front end
belt pulley missing
metal is good but has been hand painted outside and would need to be striped to restore properly.
no decals (painted over)
regular drawbar
PTO looks complete
rubber holding air, but checking all over surface of tires
New exhaust
pretty much looks like its all there, some small parts like shifter nob gone, etc.
Tractor was in blackberry mound for years, then new owner draged to his place and started to "restore" it

Thank you,
Ron

We are on the coast of WA and have used a VAO on our stump ranch since we got the place in '55. My father used it to pull stumps and many other uses it probably wasn't intended for. It has served us well, especially considering the block was brazed up almost 50 yrs ago where the original owners let it freeze up and bust. It will pull a heck of a wagon full of wood and is stable enough to go over some of the rougher ground you may be talking about. At least our orchard model is extremely stable. It may set a little lower than the "C". Some of the more expert folks here probably know all those details. We use ours for brushhogging, mowing hay with a john Deere sicle bar mower, pulling trailers, disks, etc. and have even occasionally used it with our single bottom plow that came with it. Ours has the eagle claw hitch and we've never had a problem with anything we wanted to hook up to it, except a three point disk I purchased three years ago. The eagle claw doesn't put downward pressure on the disk so it won't cut. In short, our case VAO has done yeoman duty for as long as I can remember on a similar place with similar needs. Good luck.

A good choice for your first or last tractor in my opinion. I would say that it's worth between 4 and 7 hundred; at least that's what I've been paying here in western Colo. You seem pretty concerned about the cosmetics...are you buying it to use or restore as a trailer queen? If you're restoring to like-new you need to really look at how original and complete it is or you're liable to spend a lot of time and money chasing parts.

I would like to make this Tractor as restored as is reasonably possable, but the main thing is, I need it to earn its keep. We burn firewood as our main heat source, draging logs and a wagon for firewood would be 2 of the Tractors main tasks. I don't know what the Horsepower of the 46 VAC is, but if its enough, I might even try to drag stumps out of the ground with it too. Having a tractor and Wagon, would also help a lot carring feed, fenceing, etc. I would also like to convert to a 3 point, so I could use various Implements as needed. It may even see some road clearing duty during winter. No this Tractor, would not be a Trailer Queen, it does not need to be like new, just look good for the most part, and be able to do the jobs I need it to do. How available are parts for a 1946 VAC, if I break down?

Lots of parts available and a 3-point is pretty easy to do. All of the tasks mentioned are well within a VACs' ability BUT if you go to pull stumps of any size you should come up with an old tractor rim (32" works well) to run your chain over rather than hooking directly to the stump. Even then, with any tractor, you are risking drivetrain damage if you attempt to 'jerk' the stump out. A bit of digging and cutting of the roots will help. Used to be a trip to the hardware store for some dybamite and blasting caps took care of any stump on the planet but.....times change. Go to the link for more VA info...click to enlarge. 'Tractors' album has some home-brewed 3-point hitches.
