'52 Case SC PTO

I have a question about the PTO on Case SC tractors. I have a '52 and the PTO turns even when the PTO is turned off. It will stop turning if I put a wrench or something on it that will give me some leverage. Is this something that is normal for this tractor or do I have some sort of clutch problem? I have tried to adjust the clutch, but if I loosen it any further, the PTO will stop turning when the PTO is off, but it doesn't have enough power to run anything that is PTO driven.

Thanks,

Ron

readjust the Clutches so you don't get slippage when in use.
Spinning when disengaged is normal...you were supposed to put the cover on when PTO wasn't in use. Later Case added a PTO brake to stop the spinning

Ron,

First off, NEVER put a wrench on the pto when it is spinning even if you THINK the pto is disengaged. There is a HUGE amount of tourque, and the clutch could grab at any time.

I had the same problem, when I disassembeled the clutch assembly I found that the clutch plates were damaged. The tangs were bent and worn. And the basket had burrs in the grooves and lands.

I replaced the plates and belveue washers and deburred the lands and grooves of the clutch basket.

I then reassembeled the clutch assembly and tightened the clutch to the point where the clutch actuator took around 50-55 lbs of pull to engage. (as per Case specs)

This can be dissasembeled easily from the rear of the tractor.

Again BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN DEALING WITH A MALFUCTIONING PTO.

Dave, I have a 1030 case which I believe the pto clutches are slipping. What is the proceeduce to get to the clutch pack. Is there any more adjustments. The slipping started when a heavy load was put on the bailer. Now when it is loaded it slips. Can you help me?
