Hi:

Our 930 will not start and we think the problem is fuel. When the tractor quit running it was on a steep slope. The initial though was that the angle was steep enough to cause the tractor to run out of fuel even though there was fuel in the tank.

We got the tractor to level ground, checked the fuel level (about 1/4 tank) and tried to restart. It ran for about a minute and than quit again.

Using the primer pump we can get fuel at the bleed hole on the first filter but not on the second or final filter. Does this mean there is a problem with the second filer?

The starter spins the motor fine but there is no exhaust smoke visible.

Would appreciate comments.

Thanks

Well, you got fuel to the first filter but NOT the second! It's NOT going to run until ALL of the filters are bled! There is (7/8 wrench size?) plug between the first and second filter. Behind that plug is a relief valve and spring. Loosen that plug a few turns to release the spring pressure. That will allow fuel to flow to the second filter. Loosen the bleed screw on the second filter and pump the primer pump until fuel flows out of the second filter bleed screw. Tighten the bleed screws including the relief valve plug between the two filters. At this point, you should be able to start the motor, but you have one more filter (final filter) to bleed. When the motor is running, loosen the (7/16 wrench size) on top of the final filter. When the bubbles disappear, tighten the final filter plug. Everything will be bled, and the motor will run fine. Good luck.

Hi:

We wanted to post a follow up to describe how we got our tractor running.

Following the instruction from Roger (MI)and not getting any fuel to the second filter we decided to replace the first filter. The assumption was that if fuel would not enter the second filter after loosening the pressure release spring then the problem was in the first filter. However after replacing the first filter the same symptoms were present.

Now this required some serious thinking. There is fuel at the first filter but it will not go to the second filer. We actually removed the second filter canister and applied pressure as per the bleed instructions with no fuel spilling out. Not knowing the path the fuel took to go from filter one to filter two we decided to remove the pressure relief valve. Now the fuel flows.

So the solution was to remove the pressure relief valve and then to bleed as described. This allowed us to bleed all three filters after which we replaced the pressure relief valve and the tractor starts and runs. We do not understand why turning the pressure relief valve plug loose does not allow the fuel to flow but with the plug in place and the relief valve removed the bleed was successful.

We just wanted to share this follow up.

Thanks for all the help.

Thanks for the reply. Found the relief valve but now we need to get a primary filter.

Thanks for all the helpful comments.

Diesel Fool; If you follow Roger's system bleedout procedure you will no longer be fooled by the Diesel woo's. The steep angle may have allowed air to be sucked into the filter system.
Bleed out the air or water and allow clean fuel back thru the system and you can continue to wear out that tractor(of course in 30 or 40 more years).

Is there a good flow of fuel from the first filter? If not it could have picked up dirt or other junk and plugged the little butterfly check valves on the sides of the hand primer too.

How do you define a good flow of fuel? We disconnected the fuel line and let if fill a 1 quart jar. It is like opening a water tap on very low setting or under very low presure.

Thanks

It's possible some water in the fuel tank got into the lines from the steep angle and plugged the filter, you can remove the second filter and operate the prime pump to see if fuel flows out of second fuel inlet. If so, probably need new filters. If not, backtrack to first filter. Good luck with it.
