1930 Case L - Kingston or Zenith carb?

Just got my new 1930 Case L. I was surprised to find it had a Zenith carb on it. I know that they had Kingston carbs until 1935 or so. Should I try to find and refit a Kingston carb? How much trouble is it? Where do I get the pieces? Yes, it is the original motor, both the motor serial no. and the tractor serial number match.

Thanks, Steve

Steve, I haven't had any experience with the Kingston carb, but the Zenith is a good item if it's clean and adjusted properly. I got a kit for mine from Dave Reed at Otto Gas Engine Works.
I don't have any idea what would be involved in swapping to the Kingston. Does your tractor have the original dual-fuel manifold, or does it have an LA straight gasoline manifold? I'm just wondering if maybe the carb got swapped along with replacement of a manifold.

Does the DE represent Delaware? I spent 1963-1966 at Dover AFB.

Robert,

I checked again. I have the gasoline (not the "Low Cost Fuel"), manifold setup, both intake and exhaust. This was put on the L from about 1935 on, and could be used with the Kingston carb, but was often put on at the same time as a replacement Zenith carb. Right now I don't exactly know what I'm going to do. Part of me says --put it back to its original configuration, and another says -- if somebody went to the trouble of converting it, there may have been a good reason. What do you think?

On another matter, will you e-mail me directly? I want to discuss the decal and paint striping for the early Model L's. I've been looking at some of the early Case advertising literature, and at the Case Photo Archive book, and I'm thinking that it was somewhat different on a 1930 L, than what you so eloquently showed here for the later L's.

Thanks, Steve

Steve, I have a 1929 L with a Kingston carb and have compared it to other L's the manifold for the kingston has another butterfly above the carb and also has a different kind of governer. I'm not sure how much change there was in 1930 The air cleaner may also be different as it is on the C model. It all depends on how original you want to make your tractor. I know you will loose HP by going back to the Kingston.
