My cousin's 2290's AC is not working. The compressor will not engage. It worked well last summer. I know there could be a multitude of reasons why it does not work, and many of these with expensive fixes, but is there any simple things to check before he calls for a repair person? Any help will be appreciated.

John

The most common reason is loss of gas pressure. ie) You've got a leak somewhere. This causes a safety feature to keep the compressor from engaging.

Is there any way to check if the freon charge is low without guages?

Well, this may get me shot by any good air-con guy, but here's what I do. Get yourself a piece of electric wire and jump from the hot side of the battery to the compressor. If it kicks in you will know 1)That the clutch and compressor still turn 2)If the unit chills down, then you at least have some freon. 3)If not cooling at all either you lost it all or the compressor is shot. Of course there are all kinds of other potential problems like a plugged condensor or dryer, but start there. Then, if it is cooling slightly, get a soap solution and start looking for leaks by spinkling soap solution on all connections. If you get bubbles you've found your problem.

AC FOREVER; MOST LIKELY YOU HAVE LOST YOUR FREON REFRIGERANT CHARGE. IT IS DOWN ENOUGH THAT A SAFETY SWITCH WILL NOT ALLOW THE COMPRESSOR TO RUN ON LOW FREON CAUSING ADDITIONAL DAMAGE.
FIND AN AIR CONDITIONING REPAIR SERVICE IN YOUR AREA AND VISIT HIM AT THE SHOP IF POSSIBLE.
TELL HIM WHAT YOU GOT ON THE TRACTOR CAB AND ASK HIM HOW MUCH TO MAKE A SERVICE CALL AND DO A VACUUM TEST OF THE SYSTEM. SEE IF HE CAN ADD A FREON CHARGE WITH A SEALANT ADDITIVE. IF HIS QUOTE IS WITHIN REASON, GIVE HIM THE JOB.
MOST PEOPLE JUST AREN'T SETUP TO DO THIS STUFF
NOWADAYS WITH THE EPA AT EVERYONES FANNY. GOOD LUCK IN YOUR A/C REPAIR JOURNEY.
