I have a 401 that I used for 6 years. It was a great tractor but the engine was getting tired. Tore it apart to rebuild it and then found out how hard and expensive it is to get parts for these. I do not need the tractor anymore. Why put 1500 into a rebuild and get 1500 for the whole thing when I'm done? I really hate to part it out but I figure I'll get alot more for it that way than I will with the engine tore down. Any body have any thoughts?

Hey, I got a question. If you are parting it out, are the cylinder heads any good? I badly need a pair for my Case 410. Everyone wants higher than a kite for them and those arent even complete. All I need are some that don't leak and work, with the valves and springs. What would you want for them if you decide to part it out?
Thanks,
ThatOtherGuy

R Man You can buy kits cheaper than that ,if you do the work your self thier is no labor. You will not finr to many tractors for $1500 . Where do you live? How much do you want for the tractor?
Just my thoughts.

Jerry, This is a regular 400 not a super. I can easily find super kits for $400-$500 but I was told that nobody makes regular kits, you can't put a super in a regular, and that if you are lucky enough to find an original 400 regular kit that it will cost close to 1500 buy the time you get all the bearings, gaskets, etc. I would LOVE to be able to get this tractor back together. It is the best machine I have ever used. Since I am a Tool and Die Maker by trade with a complete shop right here at home I even considered buying a super kit and modifying the block and or sleeves to make it work. I am 30 miles from the factory in SE wisconsin.

R-Man,

I'm no expert, but from looking at the parts cataolg, I think the gaskets, bearings, and heads are identical between the 400 series and the 400 super.

You may be right about the pistons and sleeves not working, but a set (1/4" oversize) advertised on eBay by some kind of ag dealer says they will fit either.

I have a 401 that burns oil. I don't plan to fix that as long as oil pressure is good, but like you, I'd also like to know if pistons and liners are available....

If you part it out you will have lots of shipping to do. Once you ship it out and the customer isn't happy with it or it's damanged during shipping the customer will say you shipped it that way. Once the hot items are gone you still have a bunch pieces left over. Some guy is going to want pieces out of a trany vs buying a complete trany. It can be very time consuming parting out a tractor unless your in the business. If the rest of the tractors in good condition I would fix the engine. Hard to say without knowing whats all bad. You can get like just sleeves or pistons depend whats worn worst Put a set of rinfs and bearings and hope for the best.
