I have converted my 1951 DC and 1954 SC to 12v alternators. I went to a salvage yard and got two GM internal regulated alternators for $15.00 each. I went to NAPA and sifted through their pulley box and picked out two pulleys wide enough to accomidate the stock Case belts, had the pulleys machined to fit the belts to eliminate the screaching or belt slipping. As for the wiring, get a pigtail plug from NAPA that fits the flat two prong plug on the altinator. Follow directions that comes with pigtail. Since I have distributors on both tractors I attach a diod at the battery wire at the distributor and run a small 14g wire to the small pigtail and a 10g wire to the bat terminal on the alternator to the plus side of the amp guage. The large pigtail fastens at the bat alternator post. If the diod is not used the engine will not stop when you turn the switch off. Both tractors have been working perfectly! "Its the only way to Charge"!!!

Here is a link to the instructions that I used to convert my '44 SC. I did invest in a new alternator (the recommended GM model) from the parts store (less than $100.00) and mine charges at all RPMs. I kept the original pulleys on the alternator and water pump. They don't match so it makes a groove in the belt but doesn't seem to hurt anything. I did the conversion five years ago.

Is it a one wire GM (Internal regulator) alternator?? or is there a regulator mounted somewhere. One wire feeds through amp meter to the battery. One wire alternators have to reach a certain speed to self energize...usually about 1200 rpm. As DCs are slow rev engines you need a small pulley on you alternator to get up enough speed to energize.

Thanks for answering, It has a 1 wire alt, do they make a small pully? since I Know the DC wont reach 1200 rpms, I have a mag. and I figured it out, but the tractor was set up to 12v but the ampgauge was broke, I bought another volt gauge, still no voltage"" I understand the pulley on alt. needs to be smaller, I heard 4 to 1. The guy I bought the tractor used no lights, and I installed lights. He told me to pull out a switch on dash either to excite the alt. or charge the battery,I also heard I need a diaode in line to keep battery from draing back. A proper wiring for this would really help me out"" Thanks alot for replying back to me""""" "

Goose:
As one wire alternators were not standard I don"t know of a wiring diagram...but it is pretty simple. Wire runs from Alt to Ammeter then wire from ammeter to the positive battery terminal on starter solenoid(heavy terminal). Wire from there to ignition switch and from ignition switch to the starter solenoid (activator terminal small one)and from ignition switch to the coil (I have distributor not Mag). I don"t have a diode but it may be built in to the alternator.
My alt has a 2.5inch pulley came from teh electical shop that provided alternator.
You get one speed increase from crankshaft to water pump shaft (crank pulley is bigger) and then additional speed increase from water pump shaft pulley to alt pulley. Have had no prob lems in 2 years of use

Go to the archives & pull up Bob M's conversion instructions. He's got some good digrams for IH conversions, they will work for Case, too. We've done a couple & they work well. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)
