I have a 1170 black knight that overheats under any kind of load. Has new thermostats and engine was just overhauled, so the block isn't plugged. Has a used radiator that about 5 tubes are plugged off on. Is it fairly common for these to overheat or am I overlooking something? Thanks in advance.

Hey JDubie: I would definately suspect that radiator. I don't think there was any extra cooling capacity to begin with on a new radiator. I had a cooling problem with my 1175. Overhauled the engine, replaced the radiator with a new one. I even added an extra radiator & fan, but nothing worked. I completely cured the problem by shimming the fan shroud back about 3/4". Believe it or not.

My 970 began overheating last spring, never leaked just boiled out the overflow at the cap ... first under heavy load, then mild load and finally after burning only about 2 tanks of fuel it overheated while idling ??? Pump and belts were OK, replaced the thermostats, power washed the radiator outside, all to no avail. Finally took the radiator to a shop they pressure checked it, found it OK. Then they flow-checked it a found it "restricted". A $350 re-core fixed it up, now everything is back to normal. My surprise is that when it started to fail it got bad fast !!! By the way, it's really a pain to R&R the radiator because of the tight clearances to the shrouding and fan. Clearly the design is easy to assemble at the factory when the rad and shrouds are part of the front end assembly.

WOW! Just sent my 1974 870 into the shop for the same problem. Am I going to pay big bucks for this, or was the 770/870/970 different from the 1070/1170/1175?

Hey Mikey: Never had a cooling problem with the 870. The 1170 was turbo'd.
