I just purchased my first tractor a case model 401.It ran good ,but needed pto clutch plates.I replaced the plates and started changing all the filters and oils.It was running good, but a couple weeks later I started it and it sound like it was missing and die.Now when I try to start it anti-frezze comes out the exhaust.Someone had JB welded a nipple with a screw cap on the radiator.
I wondered if this might of cause my problem and cracked the block or head. Thanks for any info Jon!

Jon-

Sounds like the heads are going to have to come off and see what's going on in there. Got a feeling the first gentleman is right that wrote to you, a crack in one of the heads. It doesn't sound like a cracked block or sleeve, because then you should be getting water in the oil pan or blowing water out of the radiator from the engine compression. We had a hard time getting ours to seal the gaskets, but the heads were good. When you go to put the heads back on, use some Permatex Seal-a-Gasket spray on the head gaskets and then torque the puppies. Run the engine about 30-45 minutes and then shut her off and retorque the heads. Yeah, I know you have to take the vale rockers off again, but it's worth it cause you'll get another 1/8 to 1/4 turn out the head stud nuts. Then reset the valve lash when the engine is cold. Hope this helps a little.

Thanks for the info.Do these tractors have a pressurised type radiator system? Is it better to have my radiator rebuilt or can you buy new ones.

Yeah, they use a 4 lb. pressure cap on the radiators. At full load the engine temp runs at 195 degrees/180 degrees just puttering around.

I know I've seen reworked radiators for sale in Surplus Tractor Parts catalog, don't know how much they'd want for it. Probably pretty steep, that's a big radiator. If you've got a good shop around your place, you might try them to see if they can rebuild it. Let me know how you make out.

Jon-

If you have some good salvage yards close by, they would be a real good place to try first. I know Central Tractor and Surplus Tractor Parts both list rebuilt heads for the 400, but the price is $400-$500. If you get a used head, it would be worth the money to have a valve job done on it, and while you have the heads off, put new freeze plugs in them. I did a valve job on mine a couple years ago, and then got a anti-freeze leak from the old freeze plug. Not happy.

Good Luck.
