Hey this a great site. There is a 1949 Case VAC down the street for sale. Didn"t see any other implements with it. The back wheel is broken and the tires are shot. He wants an offer and I have no clue. Are parts readily available? I"ve restored cars and motorcycles but never a tractor. I am a novice as far as tractors go. It just looks cool and needs someone to give her a fresh face. Is there a ball park figure on restoring an old critter like this? I will keep reading and looking for parts at this site. Doing the homework is part of the fun.
Thanks in advance to anyone willing to put me on the right track. Thanks, Steve

Sounds just like the one I looked at last week on Centerville Rd. He was asking $750 of b/o. All the tires were shot, one rear rim rusted through. sheet metal was cut up for alt. conversion. Didn't hear it run but had new spark plugs. Missing some air cleaner parts.

Guy,

you are correct. That was exactly the same one.
I've been driving by it for weeks. I finally stopped to look at it. It is in rough shape and that's why I started looking for more information. I live in North Oaks. I am a novice but interested in learning. Do you live in the neighborhood?

Well since that particular tractor is one of those make me an offer deals and may not be in the best of shape it problably would be best to look around. I admit I am a Case man though I must say that Case equipment is great to restore and keep around there should be a healthy number of old Case's in MN and it sure would be neat of you get one that you like and this site is the best I know of for info and parts sources and all types of info on all aspects of restoration mechanical to paint and decals its all here. I am looking for an older Case myself like an S,C or D series that I can restore and take to the shows. I encourage this hobby to everyone. R Wyler

R, thanks for your input. As you can see I've been at this site a good part of the day. But it's time to sign off and go to bed. "Early to bed, early to rise, you'll never see any of the regular guys". Now that I have a better understanding of the kind of tractors there are
I will take my time to find just the right one.
Thanks again for everyones enthusiasum and help.
The rookie in Minnesota.

Yes early to bed and rise is my way as well. Yes you will just just what you want and then you will have so much pleasure from it. Takeing them to shows is alot of fun and the restoration of them is alot of fun as well especially in the winter when there are not alot of other things that can be done. R Wyler

IF YOU PLAN ON RESTORING IT AND MAKING BIG BUCKS BY SELLING IT YOU ARE LOOKING AT THE WRONG HOBBY, IF YOU WANT TO DO IT FOR THE SHEAR JOY OF BRINGING IT BACK FROM DEAD TO A GLISTING JOY THE VAC IS A GOOD ONE TO START WITH, THE TRACTOR HOBBY IS FOR THE ENJOYMENT OF THE MAN DOING IT NOT FOR THE $$ YOU CAN MAKE, REMEMBER IT IS A HOBBY DCTOM

You are right. I've restored a few motorcycles and am at the end of a custom build. There is always the problem of doing it better and better.
Which translates to more money, more money.
I do it for the fun and it keeps me out of trouble. Idol hands and all that. Still fishing for the best project. I will probably go with the one that calls to me. You know the feeling. Just have to get it.
This kind of project is what I'm looking.
Thanks, Steve in Minnesota

That tractor in A#1 top notch fully restored condition ain't hardly worth 2 thousand dollars. Maybe offer him about 10% of that. No more info than you have given, I sure wouldn't go any higher than that.

Thanks for the information. After doing some homework I would agree with you. I was telling my wife it may be better to just get a restored tractor. But now that I've seen how many different ones are out there I may have to rethink
my choice of tractor. It's fun to see it is such a deep hobby. I really didn't know. More homework for sure.
Thanks for the advice.
Steve

It's not for sale really, it's up for bids hoping for an offer above what he would sell it for. Those sellers really annoy me. If it's for sale then he should put a price on it I would say. If your offer was lower than he expects, he'd be pretty quick to turn you down but if it's higher he'd jump quicker than Jack the Bear. He wants to play cards but he's hiding his and expecting you to play yours face out. Guess this isn't the answer you're looking for. Watch out though, once you get into the tractor thing you're gonna be hooked, that much is guaranteed.

Thanks,

You are probably correct in your assumption.
I have been to the library and spent a good 2 hrs at this site and have learned a lot today. I think you are right when you say once I bite I will be hooked. I have 5 motorcycles and my wife is already cringing at the thought of a new interest. I will pass on this tractor and find something better to start with. My wife asked me when I had gotten an interest in tractors. I replied," aren't all American boys interested in cars, motorcycles, planes and tractors". She doesn't get it but us boys do.
Thanks Steve

I didn't mean to sour you on getting into tractors, it was just a little sidenote to let you know that a guy gets hooked on them. I went the same wasy as you, some old bikes, then an old truck, then for no reason a tractor 10 years ago (I live in town) and that's all I seem to fiddle with these days. The VA series are a good tractor to start with because there are so many of them around to get stuff from.

I am still going to do something but maybe jump in when I know a little more about the different tractors. I grew up in the city too. But I"ve always loved tractors and probably anything with an engine. Never had much money so I had to learn how to keep my cars running. Now that I"m older I can take on new challenges. Tractors have an appeal to me. Must be because my Dad"s family had some small farms the rented out in North Dakota and we use to visit them as kids. All I remember was a GIANT pig chasing me and all my brothers laughing their butts off. It really was huge. But North Dakota felt like home to me. I ride my motorcycles in farm country here in Minnesota a lot and I can"t tell you how many farmers wave from there tractors as I go by. I always feel great when they do it. Kinder spirits maybe. I have no need for a tractor but I just like them.
Thanks for the advice. Steve in Minnesota
