what is the max rpm for an SC??

I think it is 1,600 rpm's.

A&W dyno book lists it at 1760 RPM.

Did the newer models with aluminum pistons have a higher rpm rating than the older cast iron piston models?

In 1941 when the SC was tested, it's rated speed was 1550 with 3 1/2 pistons. In 1953, the rated speed was 1600 and with 3 5/8 pistons. I don't know what full speed was on the older models, but they bumped them up some. The engine was loaded down 160 RPM on the late ones os wide open could have been 1700 or 1710 on the early ones, but they did change with the larger pistons. I don't know when they went to aluminum, that may have been the time.
