This post if kindof off-topic, but I'm sure someone else around here has had this problem too. I have a 1996 Chevy 1 ton that keeps fouling out one of the 4 O2 sensors. What is causing this? How do you clean an O2 sensor, because I know they are sensitive to oil. Just for some background, the sensor that keeps fouling out will clear up by driving it hard, but when you let it idle for a couple minutes in gear, it starts all over again. All of the sensors were replaced in July with new Bosch sensors after a similar problem, but haven't had anymore problems with any of them execpt for this one until last month. The problem sensor is also an upsteam sensor on bank 2. Help?!

Well, it has a 350, VIN R. I think the code was a 0174 by my snap-on scanner. It said in the troubleshooter that since the O2 sensor gets stuck at a low reading(4mV)that it is probably fouled and the common cause is certian kinds of fuel system cleaners. I have recently used some Lucas cleaner, but I have used it before without any problems. I did however take the propane torch advice, and it hasn"t given me any problems yet after about 500 miles, but we"ll see.

If you have a cylinder that's burning oil, or have a little antifreeze leaking into the intake or a cylinder, and getting burned, it will quickly foul your sensor. I have heard of people burning the sensor tip clean with a propane torch, but have never tried it myself. If the sensor is bad, I guess you wouldn't be out anything to try to burn it clean.
