I had the same problem in a 580C I think the other followup has the complete solution. I was lazier about it. I just cleaned out the line and it worked fine. I used the unit about 7 more years (not many hours) and had to clean out the place where the restriction caused the particles to catch. It cost me knothing once I knew what to do. I have always had old hoes and I do not spend anymore money or time fixing them than is absolutly needed. When they get to a certain point of no return I sell them. I may not get much, but I have found it less expensive overallin taking the lower price at the end than all of the other work would have cost. IT gets too easy to put good money after bad in an old piece of equipment too. I strive to get all of the parts to wear out at once. I spent a great deal of time trying to find the solution to this probelm until a pro mechanic told me. Great group this is for fast info. good luck jd

My 580D had the same symptoms you're describing this past summer. Take the return line off and check to see if it is clogged with small granular particles. Mine turned out to be the plastic ring that holds the governor together inside the injector pump. The material it is made of had deteriorated and come apart. The local Stanadyne dealer supplied me with a new ring and seal kit for about $35. Took me about 3 hours to remove the pump, disassemble and clean, install the new seals and ring, and reinstall the pump. The trickiest parts of the job were getting the plastic ring over the mounting studs, (use a pair of external snap ring pliers and stretch it, it won"t break) and installing the pump over the seals on the pump driveshaft without rolling them over. I used a small hose clamp to compress them until they were started in the bore. Be careful not to change any of the adjustments on the pump as you work on the pump. Good luck with your problem.
