Fellas, Some of you expressed an interest in seeing pics of our 39 DC that we pulled in NTPA in Penna. in the late 60's early 70's. An old friend looked up some photos and put them to disc for me so I could share. The photos are not as clear as I would like but are adequate to allow you all to see what the tractor was like. These are from early in the tractors developement but will give you an idea of the performance level. Thanks for your patience, I said it would be a while till I could put it together. In the 1970's-early 80's there used to be a turboed CC Case puller from SE Nebraska.It was called "The Dutchman" and was pulled by an older gentleman Ralph Deckinger from the Falls City,NE area.He pulled the 4500 and 5000lb SS classes and ran decent.

Is there anyone on here from Nebraska or Kansas that remembers him?I believe his brother Ervin pulled an 856 IH.

I watched Ralph pull several times. He always took third, not bad for a tractor giving up a lot of cubes to the newer diesels he was pulling against.

Great pictures guys. My brother made a similar setup on a 1939 Farmall M in the 70's. Started out with a Corvair turbo and running gasoline. Went to a Rajay turbo and alcohol and dyno'ed at 330 horsepower. At the time it was the oldest tractor on the NTPA circuit. Don't know how that little transmission input shaft ever took the strain. I made a similar setup on my 700 diesel. Had lots of power, but the poor little turbo wasn't up to the task and disintigrated after only a few pulls. Didn't hurt the engine though... Gene

Gene, I never worried about the tranny, the DC is very strong, I have seen one setup with a blown 454 Chevy ahead of it. Started same as you, TRW then Rajay. Hard to see on the shots but the hose visible going up to the box the carb is mounted on has a solenoid that shot the alky into the turbo via an orfice, that was activated by a pressure switch on the intake manifold. My turbo was a design that I came up with after taking the head off to retrieve compressor blades and various blower shrapnel. I began mapping the compressor( several pages of formulas, and several hours.My design had an e-flow compressor mated to an F-flow turbine section to use the 5.5 stroke od the DC mill. My turbo guy thought about it for a minute, said it should work as I planned. That turbo was fantastic, allowing you to idle back without losing all the torque but would handle any rpm the 5.5 stroke would allow. The F-flow turbine was smaller than the E-flow compressor so the exhaust spun it harder. Great fun, wish we were back there at times. Glad you enjoyed, mEl

Camboted, Look for "How to select and install turbochargers by Hugh McGinnis-ISBN 0-912656-05-0. It has the info you seek, it was my buddy for years. TRW blowers at that time, 3 sizes from small to large B-F-E. b-used on corvair. many found a home in tractor pulling early. Our design was a combimation of F-E. F turbine wheel with an E intake compressor. Once you have the basic sizing done you tune by useing different exhaust housings designated by A/R ratios such as .6-.7-.8 etc. The higher the number the less boost as the housings have less nozzle angle and the scroll gets larger to allow exhaust to flow with less restriction. That is as simple as I can make it, if there are others who would like to add , feel free. mEl

Larry, the pan has never been off the engine, any work done was through the side pans. never loosened a rod although one was replaced for chunking out on the brg surface, M&W pistons broke at the lower oil ring groove allowing it to rock badly so we took them out and put flattop ones in. Until recent years the tractor mowed setaside land till I bought Dad a 830 lo profile to mow with. We had orchard sprockets in the rear with the 18.4-38 rubber, made for some fantastic speeds, we now have a different tractor with the same gear setup pulling antique which will pull over 11 mph on a sled monitor in a non rpm controlled class. Antique ,nonturbo with the same gear setup, probably 3000-3500 on the turbo setup, we had some fantastic runs at 4500 AND 5000 LBS but restrained ourselves from pulling heavier,The driver in the pics is my brother who worked with me building and maintaining it. In its day it was tough to beat. mEl

Larry, Updated the 39 to the later over center clutch, with enough tight it was adequate for all we did. Our recent puller was more of a problem and we changed that to dry and put a Competetion Chevy PP in that, quite more of a project. Plate between engine and bell with a seal in it a wear sleeve on the crank and machining everything so it would work, had to take some off the front side of the flywheel to make up for the plate thickness. The 39 never refused to lock up and you could use it like a slipper if needed!! and that disc is still in it. BTW, we still are running the NTPA required steel flywheel in that one. mEl
