Hello,

I have a 1972 580 ck "B". Has the backhoe attachment. I had to remove the hydraulic pump over the summer, and broke the alternator. I replaced the alternator, and used the tractor. The battery that I use is for a tractor trailer. It is a 12v 1000cca battery. I use the tractor sparingly. I have had to charge the battery twice this winter. When I charge it, I always do it at 2 amps. It takes about two days to do it. When I put a battery tester on the battery, I get 14v, I max out the cca test and it still keeps over 500cca.

Does this tractor have a regular 12v ground electrical system? If I hook the battery up and run the tractor, should I have any additional voltage on the gauge then when I connect it to the battery alone?

Yes, a 580B has a negative ground. A fully charged 12 volt battery in good condition will always have a voltage reading greater than 12 volts. Alternators and battery chargers have output voltages around 13.5 volts. Think in terms of pressure in a water tank. If you want 45 pounds of pressure in the tank, the water pump must pump at a pressure greater than 45 pounds to attain that pressure. The same is true for chargers. A slow charging rate prolongs battery life.
