140 oil vs 85-140

Can 85-140 oil be used in the older (teens and twenties) tractor rear and transmissions in place of 140 which is recomended? Concerned about leaks from the felt seals which were not that great to start with.

I haven't had a lot of experience in this but it should be o.k. it is supposed to have the viscosity of 85 when cold and 140 when hot. It is a major improvement in the lube department from whatever they had for oils in the 20's.
