I have a 1968 580CK Case backhoe and I was hoping someone could answer this question. Sitting on the tractor, on the right hand side, there is a hydro leveling piston. Is this piston necessary? I was thinking it's causing too much flex in the front arms and causing it to crack, as everyone I have seen has been cracked in the same place. If this isn't the cause of the cracking, could anyone offer a suggestion as to what is?

I had removed the leveling cylinder on my 580 CK and it works fine. I use the loader bucket indicator (on the right arm) to level the bucket.

The attachment to the arm of my Case was welded when I purchased it. I later found out why. If I angle the bucket downward to the extreme when I have the loader elevated and then bring the bucket down there is not enough travel allowed and the piston will bind. I noted this when I shot the bracket off one day and almost took out my truck.

Lucky for me I do all my own welding.

But a good bead across the crack and be careful binding the piston when transitioning from ether extreme.
