PTO plates were a common failure, but the friction material is a burnt orange color.C1,C4,diff lock, and brake plates are all black. If you remove the shifter housing from the right side of the trans housing , you can see the suction screen. That might give you a clue to what is shucking friction material.

Torque limiter. Put it in gear (4th I think) and hold the brakes and see if it slips or kills the engine. We just had one where the Belleville spring went bad and let the torque limiter slip till it was ate up one one side. It keep plugging the filters then bypassing them and plugging up the brake cylinders in the steering valve. I would say most likely it is the torque limiter though.

Differential lock and brakes. If bronze, dif lock.

Brakes
just did my 2390 last winter. does the brakes on the tractor work? what about the dif lock? my brakes stopped working correctly just before the tractor would not move or steer because the brake lining plugged up the tran screen. just my experience. love that tractor.
