I was just wandering,Am I the only person left in north america still operating a 580 B backhoe with a hydrostatic transmission. My father bought this machine new in 1973 and we are still working it daily. It is without question the best backhoe we ever owned (just my opinion of course). It is my understanding that only 6 of these machines were ever built and shipped to Canada. We bought one new ,then another that belonged to Sommerville's in Ottawa. The only other one we knew of belonged to Goldie Moore of Ottawa.Has anyone else even heard of a 580 B hydrostatic backhoe?

I have never heard of a 580B hydro with a backhoe, but I suppose it would be easy to mount one. Case made a fair number of the 580B hyrdostat tractor/loaders. We are in the salvage tractor business and have parted out a couple. My personal opinion is that they were an advanced and expensive machine for their time and most Case dealers (or anyone else) were unable or unwilling to work on the hydro system during that period in time. One of the machines we parted had been a US military unit. Like most of the 580B's the ring and pinion are a weak link in the drivetrain system. Case has them, but you'll have to give up your first born to get one.
