Just changed the oil in the chain drives on my skid steer. I noticed moon shaped slivers of metal in the oil. I looked in the chain compartment and noticed the sprockets looked damaged. The front drive sprockets have holes machined into them, and there seems to be some type of cylinder down low that engages the hole. Every hole on the sprocket has wear and tear on it. Does anyone know anything about this

Those holes in the sprocket are for the park pin. When the seat bar (or seat bars depending on how old the machine is) is (are) up, a pin engages the front sprocket on each side. Putting the seat bar (or bars) down pulls on cables and pulls those pins out, releasing the sprocket. Sometimes the pins don"t pull out all the way before the machine starts moving, or some asshat will raise the seat bar(s) with the machine still moving, and that"s how those holes in the sprockets get beat up. Those beat up holes are where those little half-round shavings come from.

I don't remember any holes in the sprockets. Could yours have a manual park lever that uses them? The metal that I used to find in the older machines came from the axle bearings.
