I have a older 1370 that needs rings/sleeves/etc. The tractor is blowing lots of oil and that is the general diagnoses. I have been quoted over $3000 for this work. Is this tractor worth it ? There is no door or opposite window, good duals and complete front weights. Interior is in poor shape. I have been offered to trade my 1370 plus $3500 for an older 2470 without duals, but the 2470 doesn"t really interestr me. I am leanin towards the overhaul.m Any comments please? Me in Northwest Missouri

call Don"s Diesel at 800-345-6513. His listed price this month for a 1370 kit is $895. This includes rod & main bearings. He also has Victor headgasket sets, but steer clear of his pan gasket, they seep oil. Get one of those fron Case.

I'm curious

Do you expect the shop that he has do the work to not pay the mechnic anything? Also tell the machine shop to do their work for free? All because someone thinks the kit that they can buy for a third of the quoted price for the work is a bargain. Even if you do the work yourself you still will need to hire out the machine work and your own time is worth something.

Sorry to Flame you Jim but the in the big picture I would bet the shop that quoted $3000 for the work will be spending about what Don's charges for the kit parts. I know you were trying to be helpful but there is a larger picture to see here.

Back to the original question. If you like the tractor and the trans is good I would consider the work. The only way you will get your money back out of the work is to use the tractor. I don't have a real love for the 70 series cases. I think the 90 series had much better creature comforts but that is only my opinion.

We work on neighbors tractors and I think John Saeli does too. If he finds someone who does the same thing, and can fix him up before he needs his tractor real bad, he has a place to go to for parts.

You might do the wrenching and have the machine work done.

The question that I would ask is how is the powershift / final drive. If it's still good I'd be inclined to do the overhaul.
