Folks, I am getting a friend"s SC running for him. He got this one cheap, but it wouldn"t run. Several months ago I got it running, but found the exhaust leaking into coolant. Finally got around to opening it up, and found head gasket to be the problem (so far). When I was initially timing it, it seems like the distributor/magneto is way out of adjustment (but it ran fairly well. I recently took the magneto and governor drive apart, but I don"t see any sort of timing marks on the drive or driven gear. My friend fancies himself to be a mechanic ( I am a retired ship"s engineer), and he had adjusted nearly everything that could move, before we towed it over here (later got running).
Also, this tractor has been around here for awhile, tracked it back thru several owners who had it in various stages of operation. It looks as if no one has added any new parts, just rearrainged stuff as to how "they" thought it should be. The history being in question as well as mechhanical abilities of past owners, I now have the engine disassembled (opened up). I figure that there has to be an easy way to set up the magneto drive,,,but the tractor"s owner is too cheap to purchase a manual. It has a Wico Magneto....

Thanx

The timing for the mag is a punch mark on the fly wheel. Remove the pipe plug on the right side of the bell housing and look through the hole. The mag should fire when the punch mark is visible through the hole.

Oh, I forgot to tell you. It's cylinder No. 1 (front cylnder) that the mag fires on when the punch mark is visible.
