Friend is looking at a Case. He was told 1930. the serial # reads L300xxx. Is it really a "30 or as I suspect a "34?

He doesn"t see any peddles particularly a clutch peddle. Well I drove one 48 years ago and remember a clutch peddle but you couldn"t of course shift while moving.

So! should it have a clutch peddle or is it missing?

Based on the picture you emailed me, you're tractor is a 1936. The serial number on the plate on the tool box reads L300979, which would make it the 79th tractor built in 1936.

Hi Flumixt,
Your queries re the CASE model "L" tractor having a foot clutch, defineatly NOT, all of these tractors were fitted with a hand operated "Twin Disc", oil bath clutch, they did have one only pedal, this was the foot parking brake pedal, which worked on the first reduction shaft of the transmission. The formula for dating these tractors, which have only a 6 digit Serial No is - take the first and the fourth digit of the Serial No, eg 303502 = 33 = year built is 1933, only the very late model "L" tractors have a 7 digit Serial No, these take the first 2 numbers and subtract 4 which give the year built.

Also the model "L" series tractors were first introduced in 1929, and were superceded by the model "LA" in 1940. the same applies to the model "C" series tractors which were superceded by the model "D" series tractors.

Hope that this answers your questions.

Based on what little info you've posted so far, you've found a Model "L". If you can get the complete serial number, then you can do the math to find the age. Put the first and fourth numbers together and subtract 3, that will give you the year.

Model "L"s had a hand clutch, and a foot pedal for a brake. If you have an opportunity, post us a couple of pictures, and let us have a look at her. Maybe we can steer you in the right direction.

We need the forth digit for the year, I personally have never seen a foot cluth on a early L, but maybe someone could have adapted it

Thanx for the quick come-back:

Well I re-read my friends email and he thot it was a '29 not a 30. Anyway the number is L300979. As I gather you put the 3 and the 9 together = 39 then-3 gives 1936. Or is it 3+9=12-3=9 which is 1929? Its square cut and looks more '29 than '36.

He emailed me 6 pics all less than 60kb but I haven't a clue how to post em up for you or I would do it. I have W/XP & OE6. I phoned him and he will try to get on this forum tonite. Maybe he can post the pics. ===== ===== ===== ====

What I drove all those years ago I was told was a '30 but it probly wasn't an L model. I can't swear to anything really, I seem to remember a clutch pedal- maybe my imagination? Lotta years. It was NOT fun to drive. To start it I grabbed the crank in both hands and spun it at least a dozen times fast as possible. It had a bar for a hand brake. One of tuther guys was driving it standing up downhill in St Paul and the bar broke and he fell off the back then chased it down the hill. He had a bad leg so every other step was a really long hop....:-)

Glenn- I drove it in the late 50's for a blacktopping outfit in Minneapolis named Bituminous Roadways - doubt if they still exist.

You take the first two digits and subtract 4. So 30 minus 4 gives you 26. Take a look at all serial numbers on Case tractors from that time frame and you"ll see.

Lall-- That formula works for tractors with a seven digit serial number. Most of the Model "L"s have a six digit number, which mean it takes the formula I described. You were close, just off by about 10 years of production.

You would have a VERY rare Case L then as they were not marketed till 1929 and my guess is the motor would have to sit sideways hence the term Crossmotor

It's a 1936, and believe it or not the company you refer to is still here and a fairly good sized company

Thanx- My friend perused this entire site last night but couldn"t get a post to "take". Anyway he got the mssg that its a "36.

I spect pics have to go first to one of those picture album sites thence to here. I"m not into photos personally- haven"t the patience.

If anybody is really interested here I could email the pics to someone who could post them up. There would be 2 forwarded emails, 3 pics each.
