Well its been 2 years since I posted a message about excessive black smoke on my rebuilt 188 backhoe motor (can"t beleive that) I wanted to wait til the motor broke in and it has 122 hours on it now and still smokin. I have checked both the timing mark on the flywheel and the marks in the pump window. Both line up TDC. I had to alter a 9/16 box end wrench to loosen the back bolt on the timing pump to advance the timing.I turned the pump about 1/8 inch CCW if sitting in the seat. started it up and I could hear a change right away. It sounded alot stronger and just more like what a new diesel engine should sound like. (if that makes any sense) Anyway It seems like the smoke was less I will have to run it a while before I say for sure. Thanks

The correct timing for a 188D is (4) degrees BTDC.
(Before Top Dead Center) Set the flywheel timing mark to 4 degrees BTDC then align the marks in the fuel injection pump window. Remember, as you look through the flywheel openning, the DC (Dead Center) mark will be BELOW the 4 degree BTDC indication mark. Good luck. Thanks chess.

So Which way do you turn the pump to retard the timing. CW or ccw sitting in the seat?

It sure sounds good where its at!
