My 188d has new rings and no noticable blowby. Needs starting fluid and a very strong battery to kick when cold and possitively will not start when warm. The timing is set at 8 btdc. The roosta master injection pump that was rebuilt three years ago and the injectors are refurbished. Heres my questions; This is a 1970, 450 crawler machine. Are there faster turning starters than the Delco Remy? My return lines appear to leak a little, Am I loosing prime? The idle is rough and the power is poor what should I check for? Thanks in advance. Keith

BTW ,in case you didn't know,That machine needs 24 volts to turn it over properly.Hook batteries accordingly.

Tim,

The bigger case crawlers are 24 , but 450

is 12 volt. I have one and have worked on many

more and they all start on 12 v, mine is way

past due for over haul and still starts down

to about 15 deg.

My dad had a 450 w/188. It sheared key on camshaft halfway and I played hell discovering it. Symptoms sound somewhat similar. If all else fails....take a look. Good luck!

Keith,

Did all of these problems start after you did the ring job, or did these problems precede the ring job? Injectors done at same time as pump, or just recently?

Larry,
The symptoms were the same before and after the ring job. I actually changed rings because of blowby and low compression thinking that this was the cause of the poor starting. I will check valve cam timing as Tim suggested. As I mentioned the engine runs rough and is not powerful. I have cracked each injector and notice a change in idle with each line opened. Thanks Keith

I think you are on the right track with the valve timing and I think you can check it without taking it apart. Manual says: With valve clearances set correctly, dial indicator mounted above valve stem, reading taken with valve .040" off its seat. #1 cyl inlet valve 3 degrees ATC.
Best wishes, Dennis..... ..
