Need to find out if the VAC's had a longer axle on the left side. Someone cut right axle off, so I needed to change outer seal anyway so I replaced the axle from my parts tractor, that's when I noticed the replacement axle is shorter than one tractor left side. Parts tractor is same year also...Thanks Keith

Thanks Joe and Sam, measured mine from the housing to end of axle, left side is 14 1/4" right side is 10". So I take it both are suppose to be the same length. wonder if someone did this for a special reason to offset further on one side. I checked donor tractor and both axles are 10" beyond the axle housing. Think I will just get out the Portaband jack up leftside and put tractor in gear cut the longer one off. Again thanks Joe and Sam....Keith

The right axle of a 51"VAC was replaced back in the mid 60"s due to it broke a month after being severely stuck in the pasture while pulling a calf. The replacement axle was shorter than the left so dad mounted the left to the outside of the rim and the right was mounted on the inside. The axle measured the same with about an 1/8" showing and it appeared to be the same unless it was pointed out. Good luck in cutting the axle for it could damage the temper of the steel.

CLK, I cut the axle with a cutoff wheel on my grinder, was going to use the Portaband, but had no bi-metel blades. When I was finished, I picked up the cutoff stub with bare hand. Stub was not hot enough to burn me so therefore would not have lost any of the tempering. Nice squared off cut by letting the axle turn as I cut it. Oh thought I mention, axle that I replaced had been cut off with a cutting torch, that was the main reason I replaced the axle....Thanks...Keith
