Hi!

We are new to diesel tractors and have a question on starting them in colder weather. The tractor is a Case 930 and has been starting fine all summer. A couple of spins on the starter and away it would go. Now that the temperatures are reaching only high 40s (9 Celcius), starting has become a problem.

The starter spins fine (at least it seems to spin just as good as during the summer) but the tractor does not start. From the exhaust there comes a fairly thick white smoke. Does this mean too much fuel? Not enough?

During the summer we were using only one battery to start the tractor. Now we have installed a second (originally the tractor had two) batteries but lose power before the tractor starts. The tractor is not where it can be plugged in so I hope someone can provide us with some clues.

Thanks MB_PC

Check your pre-heater. It is located in the center of the intake manifold. It is a very large bolt head with a screw in the center of it. A heavy wire carries current from a solenoid. My heater was broken so we welded the heater coil. It works fine. Check if the electric wire has power when you press the heater switch. If the pre-heater is working fine, and you have strong batteries, the 930 will start in sub-freezing temperatures. CAUTION: DO NOT USE ETHER OR WD-40 WITH THE HEATER. The white smoke in the exhaust indicates that there is fuel but not enough heat.

Useing ether and or w/d can cause serious engine damage and or personal injury when used with either, intake heaters or glow plugs! w/d is less flammable,,, however use extreme caution! And test the glow system maybe it`s not working. Or get a really long ext.cord and plug her in. jsl

Heres a few things that might help. 1.Make sure you have no.1 feul in the tank for cold weather.2.Make sure your glow plugs work and use them in cold weather.3.I found that useing WD40 instead of ether isn't so hard on the engine and works just as good.4.Heres a little trick I saw a logger use to get his diesel skidder going on cold days.Since you can't plug it in, make extra long heater hoses on a car or pick up.Hook these up to the hoses used for the block heater on the tractor engine and use the heat from one engine warm the other.I saw this method used with great results. You will have to use a little imagination to make the hook up but it works good.

The 930 was a hard starter in cool weather from the day they were new. The ignition switch has a glow plug position, turn it the opposite way of the start position. But in real cold temperatures they had to be plugged in.

Don't use ether and the preheater together.Do one or the other.

We had a Case 830 diesel that had "glow plugs" in the intake manifold to heat that air prior to cranking. Does the 930 have these? If so they are heated by placing the starting switch in position to warm the glow plugs for a couple minutes before cranking. This worked good on the 830.

Have you tried giving it a shot of either. That should do it. Also, it may help to hold the throttle at or near wide open while cranking. I'm not sure if case has an automatic excess diesel when starting.

Another possibility is that the engine has lost some compression due to wear, etc... This will affect how fast the air in the cylinder will heat up when compressed to ignite the diesel.
