Have a 1962 Case 430 Triple Range. That mean LO, HI and D (drive) ranges. I can actually use the speeds R,1,2,3 and 4 on each range. I tough it was 3 x 4 speeds. But I can see this diagram at the base of the shifter, on the casting:

S. 1. 3
¦__¦__¦
¦¯¯¦¯¯¦
R. 2. 4

What is exactly the "S" at the top left? The shifter doesn't go trough there and even no gear noise can be heard. Is there supposed to be a speed?

The "S" is for start. Your starter safety switch has probally been hotwired like mine.(Both wires on the same post) It was there so you could not start the tractor in gear. I'm trying to narrow down the year of my tractor due to a missing serial# plate. My eng serial# is 2724383. Is yours lower?
Thanks,
Scott

I have a question. What kind of speed can you get out of the Reverse in idle low range, and in high rpm fast range. Also how slow can one of these 430's go 1st gear low range idle. Will it compete in slow races?

I think the reverse and the 1st gear are the same speed. I would suggest that 1st gear low range at idle is about like a slow walk... 1-2 mph.

Thats your warp drive! just kidding, that S is where you put the shifter to start the tractor. There should be a plug on the top of the trans. near the shifter, two wires come off of that to the switch. I"am not using the one on my 430. I have to put my 580 b in the s position to start the tractor. Its a safty switch.
