VAI Drawbar

Some help, please! Began restoring VAI after 20 years. Draw bar was jerry rigged but I finally found the part that bolts to the rear end castings. Are the necessary studs (5/8 x 2) tapered? Castings are partially damaged so reference points are vague.

Also, does the pin on the draw bar lock into the single large whole on the draw bar, one of the many smaller wholes or into the notches?

Thanks

There should be a piece of bent up steel welded to the top of the draw bar that slides on where the piece w/ all the small holes is....the small holes are for putting bolts in to keep your implement from swinging too far to the left, or right The 5/8th bolts are not tapered, but there should be a pin ( aprox 1 1/4 dia) that hangs down, with a bolt that holds it in towards the front of the tractor (A long 3/8th bolt)the pin goes into the bracket w/ the 5/8th bolts. Hope this makes sense to you....

Thanks Arthur!

All those parts are in place and it makes sense.

Another question, if you don"t mind? What prevents the drawbar from sliding forward and backward? It does so slightly, but I can"t imagine it would be designed to do this when pulling off the drawbar. The operators manual refers to this but not clearly. Hope you understand what I am trying to figure out.

Them rear whole of the draw bar is actually a elongated hole( the one that the pin fits in)It should do this by design....

When you talk about the "rear hole", do you mean the one that the large pin extending down from under the tractor goes into? It is the pin underneath that also has a steel strap with two bolts on either side. It is held in place, as you said, with a long bolt. If I were to pull on the drawbar it would come slightly towards me and if I pushed it in it would move slightly towards the front of the tractor.

If I understand you right this amount of "play" is normal"

third party image

This 'play' allows the drawbar to swing when turning and going forward and to lock when backing. Click the link and go to image #33 for more info.
