Boy am I confused. I have finally reached the point of trying to time the injection pump. Here is some background. Complete engine rebuild, currently the head has not been installed yet, both of the front covers are on, the injector pump was rebuilt by George and I now have it bolted to the engine. The flywheel is bolted in place as well and as near as I can tell there is only one way to bolt it in place.

Now for the problem, as I rotate the crankshaft CW when viewed from the front, the exhaust valve starts to rise when the #1 piston starts upwards on what I assume is the exhaust stroke. After the piston gets to tdc the exhaust valve is just closed and the intake valve starts to open on the down stroke. As the piston gets to the bottom of the stroke the intake valve has closed. As the piston starts to rise up again on what I think is the compression stroke I stop at tdc (actually 4 deg btdc) and check the timing marks in the injector pump. There is only one mark. I then rotate the crank one complete revolution and the timing marks line up.

It seems to me that I am 180 degrees out of time but I can't figure out why. I tried to be very careful about lining up all the dots correctly on the gears as I was assembling the timing cover.

So, what have I done wrong?!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, with George's help the problem has been resolved. I had the injector pump shaft 180 degrees out from the marks inside the injector pump. All I ended up having to do was pull the pump off, rotate the insides of the pump 180 degrees and slip the pump back on. Now the timing is spot on!
