I just got a Case VAIW. Can anyone tell me what years they were produced, what is their original color and where can I find more info about it?
Thanks Dave

Dad just recently drug in a vaiw that has been setting in the garage at his place of employment since He started work there in 1977, along with it He got the original paperwork showing where it was delivered and put into service back in 1944, in Norfolk, Va, probably a ship yard I would guess. rear fenders were cast also, 2040lbs of cast armor to be exact, that included the front push guard assembly. And like Dug G said under the multiple colors of paint flambeau red is shining through. If You look closly You'll notice the trans and diff housing are one piece not bolted together like a va series tractor, and look at the cover on the very back of the diff, same configuration and bolt pattern as a va series tractor pto. Hope You get it all fixed up and enjoy it.

I forgot to mention, the VAIW sereis manual is stil available through CAse, if your local dealers(s) cannot get, let me know and I'll get one for you. Best I remember it cost around $60 for it, and has all the cool military specs, and ways to destroy it so it doesn't fall into enemy hands.

There were about 3,793 units built many for war and non-war purposes. They usually get a lot of comments at shows. As for original color, we foiund flambeau red on the bottom layer, under some yellow, green, and blue. I"ve seen them painted flambeau red, army green, and yellow. Does yours have the cast iuron fenders or sheetmetal fenders?

A Case history book states that "By the second week in July 1942, wartime needs closed VA production for farm use, and only VAIW3 and VAIW4 (warehouse) units were produced. These were low-wheeled warehouse industrial-type units suitable for tow-motor work, characterized in many cases by a rear fender-weight arrangement of cast iron that weighed over 1000 pounds. The 3 and 4 number designations referred to single and dual rear wheel configurations. During wartime production, as many as 100 VAIW units were built daily". A photo caption says "note the running boards and the hood grab handles. This military model had special lighting for armed forces use - probably at airfields"

They were pretty strange and heavy looking units. Do you have a photo you could post?
