I am going to try to start an old Case tractor. Don't know the model # but it is a 4 cylinder and small. About the size of the old Farmall B tractors. It is a 6 volt system but I don't know if it is positive or negative ground. I am pretty sure that it is a 1950 model year.

Does anyone know if Case was still making positive ground systems in 1950? Is there any way to know without a manual?

Any info you may have would be helpful.

Pedro

I don't know what kind of tractor it is but it doesn't matter what polarity it was, you can connect the battery either way and the starter will work, just disconnect the wires from the voltage regulator and then you can see if the tractor will go. If it runs and you want to keep the 6 volt system, get yourself a multimeter, set it to dc volts, put the pos. lead on the bat. ter.of the regulator and the neg. lead on the gen. frame. Make sure the two wires from the gen. to the reg. are connected as they were and the battery is still disconnected. Start the tractor, jump a wire from the gen. frame and touch the field term. on the reg. momentarily, if the meter reads pos. v. it's a neg. ground sys. if it reads neg. v. it's a pos. ground system. the best thing to do is change it to a 12 v. neg.gr. sys.

Its probably an old VA or VAI if it has 24 in tires on the rear. These tractors were made both + and - ground. Im not sure how to check but you could ask a starter or alternator rebuilder if he knows.

If its a 50 year model and small as you describe probably a VA series and they came from the factory as positive ground. If there is no serial number plate on the dash you can look at the photo Galery at this site and see if it looks like any of the tractors shown. Good luck./
