Help

I tried to start my 51 VAC today after about 10 years sitting. Much to my surprise it started easily with a new battery (grounded to negative), new oil, new antifreeze. However after getting warmed up a little 3-5 minutes it shut down. Acted like it was running out of gasoline. Would immediatley restart, however, if I choked it until it started and then backed off the choke. Again run for 30 to 60 seconds and then quit. It did this over and over again, always starting up right away after dying. I loosened the carb from the intake manifold and noticed a butterfly valve that is attached to the throttle lever. I set the throttle lever such that the butterfly valve was open and re-bolted up the carb. Again it started right up After running a little while, however, the throttle lever linkage moves on its own and I think it closes the butterfly valve and then the motor dies again. Seems to be activated by vacum somehow. I adjusted the idle mixture screw and didn't seem to make much difference unless I opened it way up or closed it down completely. I suspect something with the throttle lever and the attached butterfly valve.

Carbs are a black hole for me as you can probably tell. Anyone have any ideas? Also, noticed that the old battery was hooked up as a negative ground so I did the same with the new battery. Also, the generator was a Chrysler Corp. so I suspect that my father in law changed it over to a negative ground system. Is there any way to know. Seemed to run turn over the motor OK and ran OK, at least for awhile.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Pedro

Check the glass fuel bowl and valve under the gas tank the valve may be restriced or closed. The fuel bowl may have an air pocket in it. To bleed it loosen the bail around the bowl and let the air escape. Replace the bowl when the fuel runs down the outside. If you still have problems you may have to get the carb rebuilt professionally with needle, seat, float, bushings, etc.

See VAI THROTTLE SETTING on page 8 in this forum on how to set the governor. However, since the governor on this tractor is a mechanical device and generally cannot change it is the least likely source of your problem. The information provided by the other posts on this subject will most likely fix your problem.

I think Rick and Roy are right on track. My tractor sat for two years and I found that I had water and rust in the tank. I cleaned the tank out and had my Case dealer rebuild the carb. They replaced all the gaskets, float, needle valve and charged me $40.00 in labor and $13.00 in parts. The tractor now couldn't run any better.

Good Luck

My guess would be , that if it sat for ten years, you probably had rust in the fuel tank. Carbs do not like that. Rick.

It sounds like the throttle is working correctly, it supposed to work back and forth to maintain a constant rpm. I would look to the fuel line or dirt in the carburator itself. You did not say if yours has a filter on it. Mine does not, but you look for one. Hope this helps.
