2390 vs. 2590, what's really the difference?

My dad has a 2390 he bought new that is pushing 9K hours (engine overhaul at 7500). Since I left, he has added a 2594 to the "fleet". Lately, I"ve been going back and helping more due to his health problems.

As expected, the 2594 is noticably stronger. I have always heard there was very little mechanical difference between 2390/2590 or 2394/2594. Does anyone know what they changed? Bigger Turbocharger? Fuel pump settings? Drivetrain?

Oldest son drives a pro-stock CASE tractor in tractor pulls. He's more up on the larger Case tractors and their differences. The 2390 heads use pencil injectors and their fuel injection pumps have a smaller capacity. The 2590 heads use a much larger (physical size) injectors with a pump that really delivers fuel. There are additional drive train differences too.

Our 2390 doesn't have the pencil injectors, they screw in like the 2590 motor we transplanted into one of our 1270's. I think all the 90 series had the screw in type while the 70 series had those impossible to remove pencil injectors.

I think the 2590 has a few extra clutchs and reaction plates to handle the extra torque. 2390's were 160 horse and the 2590's were 180 horse with the only difference I know of being the pump setting. I am sure the turbo's and everything else engine wise the same except the max fuel rate.

Thanks for the info!

I was always curious since I knew the 23/25's had the same engine, where as the 20/22's ran a smaller crank. In any case (pun intended), not a good idea to just open the fuel pump since the 25 has heavier tranny & rear end components. The 2390 always ran close to 180 HP on the dyno anyway. We've never had the 2594 on the dyno, but suffice to say it handles a 15' disk chisel reasonably well, while the 2390 struggles.
