Just purchased a 1960 case 530. Lots to fix on it; hoses, cylinder re-packing etc. This is a diesel and the motor runs and sounds fine. I am getting a leak from behind the steering wheel. Is there a gasket or seal there for the hydraulic steering system?
This backhoe loader will complement my 1946 D-4 dozer.

Gregor,

Just fixed this problem on my 530CK. Go to your case dealer and order the manual steering pump shaft seal repair kit. It comes with three or four items and explains how to make the repair. You will need to remove the steering wheel and from there the instructions take over on how to replace the seal(s).

Good luck!

Brad

You will find that there is a seal in the top of the steering hand pump on the bottom of the steering post. You will have to remove it to replace this seal. When you start to take it apart make sure you push down on the saft and pull the cover off. Make sure you donot let the shaft com up any or you will have to have a tool to get the centering springs back in place.

I have the same problem on my 530CK- besides making the ps pump get low on fluid, it drips down on the battery and then on to the floorboards- very slippery...

Yes there is a power steering fluid seal just under the steering wheel and a bearing below it. You will need to pull the steering wheel and from my parts book, it looks like the seal can just be pulled off from around the shaft. I haven't torn mine apart yet but I checked at the dealer and the seal kit is about $18.

The power steering on an early 530 Case L/B or agricultural tractor is near the front axle. There is no reason for an oil leak at the steering wheel. Perhaps someone dumped oil down the steering shaft for lubrication? Perhaps an oil leak at the oil pressure gauge?

I"m seeing in my service manual for this tractor that there are two hydraulic lines coming from the power steering pump up to the steering wheel where there is a manual pump through a control valve. So there is power steeing fluid running up to and through the steering whell assembly.
