Catfish,
I decided to stay 6v on my LA & it starts great. VAC's turn over much easier also. 6v are only $29. It also looks nice staying original w/gages, lights & generator.
Good luck,
Steve

Hey Catfish: Just my opinion, but I wouldn't do it. Hard on the starter drive & flywheel. A "tuned up" 6V system with a good battery, & proper size cables will give good performance on a VAC.

Hey John,

Can you still get good six volt batteries. I'd like to keep my VAC's origional as I can but been told it's hard to get a good 6 volt now. While your here, where can a guy buy a manafold gasket for a DC. My bud hates to buy a whole set for one gasket.

Thanks and happy Thanksgiving.

Wheat:

I've gone to Optima Gel-type batteries in my 6 volt stuff. Maintenance-free, even mount them upside down with no drips or gassing. At 1,000 CCA they will spin a VAC for long time.

I agree with John that if your 6 volt system has good cables, engine well-tuned, and the starter has good brushes and bushings, a VAC at 124 cubes ought to start just fine. 12 volts is just going to mask any other problem. I also like to place the ground cable on a starter mounting bolt to minimize system resistance.

Frank: I can't see in the picture...how do you anchor the optima battery??? I am thinking it would be a good idea but some of the fields I mow are a bit rough and there is alot of free space in the battery tray with one of these.

Paul:

There are lugs on the base ala a conventional modern battery. I built a square tubing frame, notching it out for the lugs and then bolted that down. It's pretty secure.

Paul. What kind of mowing system are you using? I recently purchased a mid '50s VAI and also bought a 5 ft King Cutter Mower for it.....the price was right. I tested it out before I put it away and the tracor seems to have enough HP for it. I will be mowing about 10 acres/year with it (just knee high grass). What do you think?.

I have bought them from several places on the web. I think the last one was the battery warehouse.com.

Here is a link to more information:

They are more expensive, but they last a long time. I really like them.

Hey Wheatstraw: Happy Thanksgiving to you also. A Group 1, 650CCA Battery @ 0 degrees F is a popular Battery. It will do a good job. NAPA, CarQuest, Interstate all sell them. We stock the Manifold Gaskets.
