case VAC mower deck - how big??

I have a 5 foot brush hog and a 6 foot Woods finish mower that I presently use with my 1948 Ford 8N. I am looking at a 55 or 56 case VAC with live PTO in good condition. It appears the power rating is marginally lower than the Ford. Should it have enough power to handle these implements?

I have a 1953 VAC and I just baught a 6' finisher and tried it out last night. I was debateing pushing her to a 7' but I am glad I didn't. The 6'er seems to be about right, she handles her well but I think the 7 would have been pushing it. I have a hilly property thou, if it was dead flat I may have tried the 7.

I'm running a 5' King Kutter behind a '51 VAC at 6,000 feet elevation with no problem in weeds, grass/alfafa pasture and willows. It handles it better than any 8 or 9N Ford I've had. Don't know where you got the power ratings but my 'seat of the pants' dyno says different.

Oh yeah, gotta have the over-running clutch on any tractor without a live PTO or your life will be miserable.....been there and done that!

Will NOT running an over run clutch damage the tractor's clutch or transmission?

It works similar to a hand held ratchet. If the mower blade has too much momentum and starts to push the tractor through the PTO shaft, the overrun clutch begins to ratchet. You are probably less likely to damage the tractor gears and clutch with the PTO overrun clutch installed. It allows you to stop and put the tractor out and in gear with the mower blade still turning without scraping any gears.

If you have been running a mower behind an 8N, you either have an over-running clutch or you have a wild ride when you step on the clutch to stop.

The overrunning clutch allows torque to be delivered to the mower but keeps the momentum in the mower from pushing the tractor along after you disengage the clutch. Basically it"s a ratchet that goes inline on the PTO shaft and keeps you out of the ditch.

I speak from experience.... I have a 5" finish mower behind an 8N and wish I had a little more power (it"s a really tired 8N too).

After watching Dad with a 8N Ford pulling a 2 row Dearborn plow, plow deep then plow shallow to keep going I was not impressed. 8years later with the same dearborn plow and a VAC Case with wide adjustable front axle Dad plowed the same bottom with dirt rolling across the main frame of the plow but not one single time did it lose traction, not one time did it power out.And the soil is pretty tough here in most of West Virginia. I am a believer....8N's are trailer Queens.

Not to start an arguement with anyone as I like Case better than the 8N. But, we had a 49 8N with 11-28's and fluid and we plowed the hills with the 2-14 Dearborn and no problems. Pulled it any place we pulled 3 with the DC or 2 with the SC's. The little Ford was okay as long as you used their equiptment, IE-mower, cultivator, disk, etc., but not when you hook on to other equiptment. We hauled bales down the big hills but only put the wagons with spoked wheels so we could chain it up. Nothing like a wild ride once those wheels start turning backwards. Oh, Unc used a 1 bottom 16" in our hills with his VAC.

I have a '53 VAI and plan on running a five foot King Cutter brush hog this summer (first year). What is the over ride clutch you guys are talking about?? It sounds like it protects the implement from spinning beyond 540?? I know the VAI has a switch for the throttle to allow the engine (and therefore the implement) to run faster than 540. I do not think the VACs have this. Any input would help.

Over ride clutches are used because a brush hog or other implements can act like a flywheel. It allows mower etc. to keep spinning even when pto shaft stops. Available at farm supply stores. When i was a kid I watched, somewhat amuzed, as my dad drove right into a fence trying to stop a VAC with a bushhog attached spinning full bore. Brakes wouldn't hold and he couldn't pop tranny out of gear quick enough.

The over running clutch, about 60.00 will let you shift gears without waiting for the blades to stop spinning. A necessity if you don't have live PTO. It has nothing to do with the speed of your PTO. Russ

I use a 60" belly finish mower under mine. the belt gives much sooner than the engine. as already stated, no live PTO. an over-run clutch would be the ticket, I don't have one, but I also don't have much to mow around that I have to worry about stopping quickly-I've also gotten good at knocking it out of gear.

I have a 7 foot belly mower under mine. It is not unusual to get into grass a foot tall. The belts are a problem before the engine gives up. DK

My dad always pulled a 5ft. brush hog with our VAC and it did well. Buy an anti-overrun clutch to put on the VAC, it does not have live PTO.

First off the VAC does not have live PTO, it operates the same as your 8N Ford... As far as power, My 1954 VAC 14 will out pull any 8N, I have pulled my 7 ft Landpride finish mower with mine, but I prefer my 211B Case with the triple range tranny for the tough stuff
