VAC ignition problem

I have 5 VAC's. They all run fine but one. It burns points left and right. I have a coil with an internal resistor. I have tried swapping out the distributer with another, and same thing with that distributer. I put a Pertronix kit in it from this site, and the problem was gone, until I took it out because the darn thing started too hard with it, plus it would kick back when cranking with the starter. What an I missing? I've also tried swapping out points from an old ditributer and they burn too. Is the condenser too small? The tractor is still 6V positive ground.

I had to reset the timing when I put the Pertronix module in my VAC.

12v system with the Pertronix Fireball coil...

When you installed he Pertronix unit, did you check the timing? Even though the Pertronix unit sits in place ofthe points, it may "fire" a tad bit earlier or later. Timing must always be checked after a Pertronix install, for this reason.

If you are running 6 volts then you don't need the resister in the coil it is only used when you are running 12 volts. Walt

Look at the points and see if it seems to be burning the metal off one side and depositing on the other side. This generally means the condenser size is wrong (too big or too small depending on the side it deposits on and I forget which is which).

The pertronix module says something as well. If it"s kicking against the starter you might have a timing issue (sounds too advanced) that you might need to work on too. That might have been why it started hard. I"ve only used one on 12 volts but was very happy with it.

Hope this helps.

Wrong polarity from coil to distributer will cause points to burn.

Yes, the coil always is wired the same as the battery. If + post on battery goes to ground then + post on coil goes to ground thru distributor.

Bad condensors can cause points to burn.

Well, it rained today, so I hobbled the vac into the shop to try to resolve this BS. First, I put the Pertronix kit back in. Then I pulled my pickup into the shop to run the timing light and low and behold, it ran about 10 deg. advanced with points yesterday, and 45 deg advanced with pertronix, so I moved the distributer one tooth back and got it dialed in at about 2 deg, runs great now. I have several of these kits on my IH, and this is the first one I have used in a CASE, and the IH ones were just drop in and go, no retiming as they ran great with the kit.
