580C Left Rear Wheel (Only) Locked Up!

I have a Case 580C CK with Extend-a-hoe. It's been working just fine until the other day. For no apparent reason the Left Rear Wheel is now "locked up". I can rock the assembly about 1-2 inches by grabbing the tire tread "knobs". Mechanical sounds occur at the forward and rearward limit of travel; like something is interfering. I've cracked the hydraulic brake line - No change. Raised up on its own stabilizers the Right Rear Wheel assembly rotates forward and reverse just fine under power (by hand it's hard, but able to turn). Rotating the driveshaft by hand results in only the Right Rear wheel rotating. There's what appears to be an inspection plate near what I believe to be the brake inspection housing (5-7 bolts, a spring, and a brake actuator, I think). I'm reluctant to break that seal without knowing what could happen as well as something about what the problem might be. Anybody ever had this happen to them, or have any ideas what the problem might be? Thanks.

The brakes are easy to work on. Remove the cab floor pan and its easy to see and work on. Its no problem getting parts. If your going to do your own repair work on the 580C you may want to get a service manual from your Case dealer, there around $60. I can email you a copy of the brake page if needed.

Would much appreciate a copy of the brake page. Yes, I do intend to tackle it on my own (at least at first). Thanks.

You have a condition where the brake accuator plate operating balls have rolled out of the seats this is caused by the brake travel is to loose or sometimes the linings will shear off the rivets which gives to much travel either wayyou need to take it apart unhook the emer. rod and brake line there is 4 1/2"bolts there is a larger headed bolt at the bottom it can stay in just jiggle it outward there is a small drum that might fall out but that is all I hate to tell you this but the 580C has the sorryest brakes invented they are shoe acttived drum/disk operated I'm a Case Tech so I can say it

Does this mean I can fix the entire problem by going in thru the inspection plate in front of the axle shaft housing? :-)

Or does the entire rear section of the drive train (the 3rd member) or one half of it (an entire axle shaft housing) have to be removed? :-(

Should I have certain parts on hand before I begin the repair or can I simply reseat/reset what's there and then adjust it?

Do you have a page or two out of a tech manual that you could fax me (703) 393-1724, so I can see what it's supposed to look like? If you have on-line access to the info you could even e-mail me. Would my local CASE dealer even have info (much less the parts) for something this old ('76-'78, I think)?

Thanks.

Yes your Case dealer should be able to get the parts because these sell very very good. There is a housing on each side of the trans. case in front of the axles, that the slave cylinders sit on these are the four 1/2" bolts I'm talking about. The floor pan isn't easy to remove I always work underneath. You don't have to split anything each side comes outward towards the tires I don't have a fax. You'll just have to take it apart to see sometimes it not bad and others it's real bad with everything ground up

Mike,
Thanks for the long distance assistance. If the weather holds, I hope to get to it this weekend. Sounds like this is a little beyond something "harry homeowner" could do. Hope I'm up to it.
