Do the 2 different VAC crankshafts(VT3201&VT5200)swap? I have a VT3201 laying around I wanted to get ground to put in a 1948 VAC and the crank came out of a 1944. The parts manual says they are different, but doesn't say why or say it's a "will fit" kind of part.

As I understand it, the early VAC motor although designed by Case was actually built by another manufacturer and I do not remember who maybe Waukashaw. I cannot speak directly for the crankshaft but the blocks and heads readily swap. The oil pump is built into the maincap on the early motor but that is the only real difference other than casting numbers.

See, what I have here is a 1944 VAC with an early Continental built CASE W124 motor, everything on it was good except that it would fill the radiator with oil in about 15 minutes, which turned out the block was cracked bewteen every sleeve top to bottom and even down into the oil galley, so I bought a 1948 for parts that runs, but doesn't drive. I want to get the early crank ground and put it into the later block, so I can overhaul it in a short period of time. I would just re-ring the running motor and give it a valve job, but the last time I half-a@@'ed a motor I ended up overhauling it in a year anyways due to a bad crank.

I just tore down two VAC motors, both with the late VT328 crankcase casting. One motor had a 3201 crank, the other had a 5200 crank.
