I am starting the teardown on a 188 diesel out of my 350 crawler. It's an out of frame rebuild. I have been paging through the manual to see any gotchas with the rebuild. I noticed that for the rear main installation, they recommend 2 special tools for this install. Is this necessary, or is it a pretty standard pressed in seal? My old one isn't leaking at all, but I would like to replace it while it's out.

Thanks,
Jon

Re: 188D Rear Main Seal is BIG! in reply to Jon (IN), 06-16-2006 13:40:34
Because the seal is big, even pressure must be applied to install the seal properly. Pounding it in is NOT wise. It would be best to use a piece of metal that covers the entire seal and use a hydraulic or arbor press. If one side is going in faster than another, release the pushing pressure and adjust the seal plate in the press to make it go in evenly. Good luck.
