188 diesel crankshaft - Safe to turn down?

Got the 188 engine tore down in my Case 350 trackloader. Looks like the #2 rod spun a bearing. It doesn't look too bad, but I want to know the thoughts on turning the crankshafts on these 188's. I have read a few posts about crankshafts breaking after they have been turned. Is this valid? How do I make sure mine is turned down right?

Thanks,

Jon

Nitirited crank Re: 188 diesel crankshaft - Safe t in reply to Jon (IN), 06-18-2006 09:39:11
Case uses a process to harden their cranks and have Nitirited crank bearing journals. This process usualy never make it below .020 if ground into it will just wear faster than the others. Case calls their hardenen process Tuffride. Only grind the bad ones.

Re: Safe to turn down? Yes, but...... in reply to Jon (IN), 06-18-2006 09:39:11
Recently, I worked on a 530 Case 188 diesel with a bad crank. Number 3 had spun a rod bearing and would NOT clean up at .030 under. I had a crankshaft machine shop weld up #3. All journals (rods/mains) then cleaned up at .010 under. Personally, I get nervous whenever any crankshaft is more than .030 under. The early Dodge hemi's only had .010 crankshaft surface hardening. Once it was turned, it was junk! The Case surface hardening is well beyond that, just don't exceed .030 under.

Jon, Grinding a 188 is not a problem , why it needs grinding can be a problem. A failure related to extreme heat can cause a change the heat treatment in the metal in the crank . Your best answers will come from john s on the
crawler board.
