How do you test the electric guages in a 1030? Everything else I have has mechanical guages and I want to keep the original CASE guages if I can. Also, I was reading in an earlier post that it is bad to use starting fluid on a CASE diesel, why is that? Does it not get along well with powercells? I have used starting fluid on mine for years because if you don"t, it just smokes for about the first 5 minutes of cranking.

How do you test electric guages? Ground the sender and see what happens?

That's what I did to 2 of my 930's on the fuel sending unit, touch a screwdriver from the wire in the center to a screw that holds the sender in the tank & the gauge should go to the "FULL" side, just dont hold it there long I dont know if that will damage the gauge or not, momentary shorting will show a good or bad gauge.

okay, did that and fuel guage moves but temp guage does not. Where can I get a fuel sending unit that does not cost more than the tractor?

Hi! If its your fuel and temp gauge, I beleive that the grounding method works there also. I too prefer the original style gauges. I went to caseIH the other day to order new gauges, they are about 54.00 for each one. I ordered a new temp gauge. Its hard to find nice originals with decent chrome. Good Luck!!

Don't know if your 1030 is different than mine. Both the generator charging and oil pressure are idiot lights. Turn on the switch and short the wire going to the oil sender to the block. If it lights, it's a bad sender. Otherwise, it's a bad bulb or current is not getting to the bulb. Basically, the same can be done with the generator charging light. I've used starting fluid in power cell diesels (including my 1030) for years. It doesn't need it until near freezing temps. Just remember: Moderation in all things.
