I would like to find a JD 440 with a loader on front and a winch on back in reasonably good condition. Prefer somewhere in N. Calif. , Oregon. Of course I would prefer a one owner that's always been sitting in a barn for around $4000, but that seems a little farfetched. However, I will consider one that needs work, if it hasn't been in a field for 10 years with no coffee cans on it, with worn out tracks.
Were these made with diesel AND gas engines, too? I think I'd prefer the diesel, even if it is a screamin' Jimmy.

This spring bought a 440C with the gas engine. I checked out the diesel, but was advised to stay away as they are hard to maintain. Mine is more of an AG model, has the 3 point hitch & PTO. I like it better than the D2 I used to have, even though it has less power. It has been very easy to work on and to get parts for. I have the 5 roller model. In my area (Cal. wine country) they fetch a fair price as they are nice workers; I paid $4500, but it was expertly maintained and always kept in a barn. Good Luck.

Where in the wine country are you? I am near you, on the coast. Could I see this machine sometime, when I am passing through? I come to Santa Rosa and Sebastopol every now and then.

"Auntie Em, Auntie Em." Hey wake up!

I have a 440 and like it. pushes trees real nice. Manual 6 way blade is a pain and hyd doesnt respond very fast. the front end is kind of light. part are scarce. You might be better off with 450. The 440 has steering levers and an hour or 2 of work is a real work out.

John Deere did make a wheel tractor with gas and diesel engines; one was the starter motor. ;-)
Sorry I couldn't pass on that one.

The 440's came with 2 cylinder gas or 2-53 Jimmy diesel. We ran both but I prefered the diesel, more torque, faster hydraulics, MORE power. Also more broken drive axles, spent lots of time tightening loose bolts. Not even Loc-Tite stood up to that Jimmy but still my choice. Look for a reverser model; nice on the dozers, required on the loaders. Remember the reverser is not a power-shift, you must disengage the clutch before shifting. We had a number of operators who didn't know or believe....remove grill, hydraulic pump, radiator, engine, etc.

Good Luck,
Lee

Yuk Yuk, very funny. Seriously, thanks for the advice. Here in Oz we aren't used to doing really hard work, so I may uplevel my preferences to a 450. Sounds like a better machine for me.
My main concern here is having a loader capable of loading a dump truck yet having the ability to scrape and doze some. The winch is always nice for dragging logs and stuff. I don't expect it to do the same work as a D6. I want a rig capable of being moved on a sturdy 2-axle equipment trailer. Do you think such a rig could be towed by a 1 ton pickup or is that dreaming too? I don't know what these things weigh.

We moved our 440s, loader or dozer, on a two axle trailer with a 3/4 ton pick-up. I wouldn't try that with the 450, they are a lot bigger and heavier than the 440s.
