After cleaning-inspecting and adjusting, it is clear that my left side steering clutches are bad.
Does anyone have any helpful advice that they can share with me before I start into this tractor. This will be my first steering clutch repair job.
Thanks
Chappy

Chappy,

I am in the process of putting my '51 TD 18A clutches back in now. You don't have to have a press to take the clutches apart, only if you are going to disassemble the center hub and spring assembly.

I would take it apart first in order to see what parts you are going to need before I would buy anything. I found that mine only needed the rust and gunk cleaned out of them to free them up so they will disengage.

I have an original IH service manual for this tractor, and I think you are really going to need one in order to understand how the drive from the ring and pinion disconnects from the clutches. I will be glad to copy and mail or fax the pages covering what you need if you want them.

Email me if you want me to do this.

Make sure you have the parts first. It will take some time to take a part. You virtually have to take everything off the top to get access to the top cover plate to the tranny.

Have a press, there is a big spring in there and you have to compress it a bit to get it a part.

You know of someone with a bead blaster ect they can bead blast the parts and you may not need new parts.

You might be cheaper with a replacement than taking it a part and having to find the parts.

I made the link on your stuff but forgot to put your TD18A pictures out there. Will try to get that done tonight.

I should have the new message boards up soon

Thanks

wk
