Just came across a '42 Cletrac for sale. Military issue and rubber faced tracks. Looks like it even had tail lights. 6 cylinder Hercules, supposedly runs good. The sign says $2000, any suggestions or comments?

I saw an ad I believe that was out in Colorado a year or so ago for a military Cletrac. They were used at airbases and at harbors for towing during WWII. They were a relatively high-speed tractor for towing trailers and planes. This is all I know about them. Do you have a picture??? Would be interesting.

Was this machine on standard crawler chassis or does it have the sprung bogey "tank-like" military tracks? If the latter, it is a Cletrac M2 made by (!) John Deere during the war for the war effort. Otherwise it sounds like a model BD or DD. The BD weighed in around 9,000 lbs wheras the DD was around 13,000 lbs.

I would say it has the "tank-like" tracks. I will go take another look in a couple of days and look clser to the build plate on hte bulkhead. I gotta wonder what these were used for and what i could use it for now.

In other words, if it runs and the undercarriage is not shot; might be a deal. JD-8 is looking to bring a new puppy home. From my 2 years of shopping it sounds pretty good. So what is the freight to Texas from there?

Be very careful re the tracks for this machine. They are rubber with steel bands (wire rope)moulded in. They also have steel pads with rubber moulded on, which gets lifted very quickly when the rust gets underneath. They very quickly deteriorate if left uncared for and are rare and hence expensive. I looked at an MG1 and was unable to find tracks. If I recall she was 12,500 lbs and had a 110V (5KVA?) generator on the right guard and a high pressure compressor on the back (PTO driven). I was told she was capable of 22MPH! Imagine that on a set of tracks! Downright scary I reckon. They were used to start aircraft on the tarmac (hence the gen.) and to quickly remove aircraft from the runway or when they got bogged in the mud off the tarmac.
Too fast as a dozer, but a special machine as a restoration project. If you are that way inclined...GO FOR IT and best of British!

Cheers

Glenn

Just browsing for Cletrac related stuff and came upon this old string. I own a '49 BG with a 9' Heil dozer and Carco winch I use up at the old homestead in the Adirondaks. I remembered the following museum page from a previous search. Mark, did you end up buying the machine?
