I'd like to buy a crawler loader. I've found 2 1010 crawler loaders for sale. One is gas, one diesel. A friend has tried to caution me by suggesting that the final drive units or final drive case may be a weak point on this model, and expensive to fix. Does anyone have personal experience or suggestions on this? Is the 1010 a good unit for a "handyman" who wants to work around the farm and woods, and maybe a little landscaping?

if they have good cleets on the tract it seems to be hard on the clucthes but if you make sure to keep all bolts thight i don't think you will have much trouble with cracking the housing with commen sence use the 430 & 420 had more trouble with cracking the housing if you ever see loose rust between rear end and housing stop right away take it apart and tighten housing bolts i know by experance

I have restored/reconditioned several 440's and have always wanted to do a 1010. I have purchased a couple 1010's with no cracks or busted final drives, although I have seen numerous 1010's with the famed cracks. The word around here is they are weak in the 'hip' area.

Look it over real good. If no cracks I would purchase it. Just remember to not over do it. I cracked one of my housings by trying to clear land with it, pushing on trees 10-12 inches in diameter or more.

I think they are excellent "handyman" dozers, Light and strong.

Just my $.02,
Bob

I have a 440 dozer. Great tractor, gas powered, for general farm use. I'm in complete agreement with both guys. The final drive is weak, the bolts come from the factory with keeper washers on then, the ones with the little lips that you bend up on the bolt to keep it tight. When they lossen the cast breaks as well as gears. The Cast coast $850 two years ago. Lock-tight didn't work for me. Drill and wire the bolts, like aircraft, problem solved. Hal
