We have an AC HD-6G with one of the steering
clutches stuck in engaged position. The lever
and mechanism seem to actuate OK, but the
clutch does not release under power. We have
tried pushing against a tree until the track slips.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to loosen
this clutch other than dismantling the final drive to fix the problem? Can we pour some kind of fluid into the clutch housing? etc?

Manual states to fill compartment with enough
mineral spirits to reach clutches. The drain
plugs must be in the bottom as most are missing.
An expansion plug from an auto parts store is what
I use. Running maschine for an hour or so will
hopefully clean and break them loose. If machine
was stuck and water got in then you may still have to disassemble.
A special compression tool is needed to work on the clutch pack.

I have HD 5, I believe the only difference between the two is the motor. I've had my clutches out a couple of times. You will need to take your fuel tank off. Then take the cover off and you can look right down on it. You'll see the brake band around the clutch and it will be connected with the brake pedal. The two pins in the brake band have 1/4 inch holes in the end of them threaded. N/C (20 threads per inch) There should be two 1/2" pipe plugs on the outside of your cat, just above the track with 1/2" or 3/8" square holes in them. With a little heat they should come right out. Now you should be able to get a long bolt in there and use it as a puller. Now for the removal of the clutch. There will be a ring of 1/2" bolts on both sides of clutch, six I think. You take those out and in order to do so you will need to be able to move cat a little to get to all of them. After getting all the bolts out use the brake band as a sling to raise it out of there. I put a chain around the canopy and used a come along. Now if it doesn't wan to come out you may have a 7/8" bolt in the middle of the flange for final drive side backed off, this is what happened to me and why I was tearing it down. My right steering brake wouldn't disengage. If this did happen I made a 1 5/16" wrench out of 3/8" steel and had to bend it just a little to get in there, slow but got it. Hope this helps.

I put this on another place, but may apply to you also. The part where clutch will not disengage.

Hope it helps, Dean

Hal,

I would go ahead and try operating the machine for a day with that clutch released. The back and forth motion will be more effective than just one way. Also as you work the machine the clutch assembly will warm up and help it break loose. Works on my HD-7, sometimes I have to run it half a day.

Good Luck,
Lee

Lee,
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try to run it as
you suggest before tearing it apart.
